Paul Jones, now a trainer with Primus Training following a change in career.

When Paul Jones lost his job in 2009 after working for ten years as a bricklayer, little did he realise that redundancy would provide him with the opportunity to forge a new career as a specialist trainer in the security industry.

Following his redundancy, Paul registered with Jobcentre Plus and was told about ReAct, a scheme set up by the Welsh Government to help retrain individuals who are newly redundant. He was also referred to Careers Wales to discuss his plans.

Paul was interested in pursuing a career in the security industry and was aware he needed to be properly trained and qualified to get work. Careers adviser Phil Mason informed him of local courses available and as a result Paul successfully applied to Primus Training and Consultancy.

Paul said: “Phil was very supportive. He talked though my options and gave me the information I needed to enable me to decide what to do next.”

Paul completed a course leading to a Security Industry Authority (SIA) Close Protection Licence. Staff at Primus Training were so impressed with his ability and enthusiasm that he was invited to apply for a position with the company to train as a trainer.

Paul added: “I went through several vigorous assessments with Primus Training and also worked towards the City and Guilds Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification to enable me to teach. “I now teach a range of courses and am also involved in business development for Primus Training. I also work part time for RAS Security to maintain my practical skills.”
